CANE Summer Institute Registration Ends May 31

This year’s CANE Summer Institute will be held July 10-15, simultaneously in person at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, with the support of the Brown University Department of Classics, and online via Zoom. The registration deadline is May 31.

For CSI’s 40th anniversary, this year’s program is organized around the theme of “Classical antiquity”: a global phenomenon in local contexts. Faculty hailing from public and private educational institutions from all six New England states and beyond, representing disciplines across the humanities, will lead institute participants in a week of mini-courses, professional development workshops, and Greek and Latin reading groups, and deliver research talks as part of the week’s free public lecture series. CSI is also launching a new intensive writing workshop designed expressly for graduate students who wish to revise a conference presentation for publication, ideally concerning a project that engages with CSI 2023’s theme. The morning session will tackle technical and practical aspects of the revision process in order to develop a robust practice; the afternoon will be devoted to discussion of each participant’s project. Due to the intensive nature of this format, participation in the workshop will be limited to 8. Decisions will be rolling, starting in April. CANE has committed to keeping the cost of CSI tuition relatively low, and to ensuring that online participation is accessible to accommodate people for whom attending in person is not feasible. In addition to setting tuition for the week’s activities at the rate of $375 for the in-person program and $250 for the online program, CANE is launching a tuition grant program for first-generation undergraduate students (Class of 2013 to current), early-career educators (in the first 10 years, at any level), and graduate students and contingent faculty who do not have access to internal funding. Members of any of these groups may request a tuition grant for the in-person or online program. Tuition grants will be made on a rolling basis until all these funds have been disbursed.

People who wish to attend the institute in person may purchase lodging, dining, and/or parking at the Rhode Island School of Design via CANE as part of the registration process. People who wish to participate in the online institute will meet in Zoom courses, separate from the in-person courses; the public lectures will be live-streamed via Zoom webinar and online viewers may submit questions via the Q&A function.
