CAES, founded in 1964, is a not-for-profit professional organization of teachers and professors of ancient Latin and Greek, which seeks to advance interest in, and the study of the classical languages and civilizations in the schools and colleges of New York State. CAES also strives to meet the professional needs of all teachers of the classical languages. One way of meeting these needs is through the CAES Annual Institute, which meets every fall.
One of the goals of the CAES website is to facilitate communication between members of CAES. With this in mind we may be putting articles and notes online, to help keep you abreast of news and events. You will also find numerous ways to contact the leadership of CAES with your comments, concerns and questions.
Another goal of this website is to promote the study and teaching of Latin, and the classics in general. To that end we accept job postings for classics-related jobs in New York State, as well as notices of internships, workshops, and study abroad opportunities.
The Annual Institute of 2014 marked the commencement of the 51st year of CAES. As a tribute to the previous 50 years, Professor Emeritus Donald Mills (Syracuse University) gave a keynote address to attendees. His keynote, “Quinquaginta Anni,” explores and celebrates the history of our organization’s founding, evolution and growth. To read the text of this wonderful lecture, please click this link.
CAES offers membership opportunities for teachers and professors at various stages of their career and development. Membership grants access to various professional development opportunities provided by CAES (including NYS CTLE hours) as well as scholarships and grants for Latin programs and individual teachers.
