DESCRIPTION:
The Brooklyn Latin School is one of New York City’s eight specialized (i.e. exam) high schools, offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma program to students from all five boroughs of New York City. In 2015, U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top 30 high schools in the nation and placed us at #4 on their list of schools that are “Beating the Odds,” honoring our work with economically disadvantaged students. We are presently seeking results oriented teachers who exhibit strong leadership, deep content knowledge, a reflective nature, the capacity for teamwork, and an appreciation for the art of teaching and learning.

MISSION:
The Brooklyn Latin School provides a specialized classical education, including the study of Latin and Greek, in a disciplined academic environment. It provides the groundwork for an understanding of the foundation of our society, while developing the leadership capacity of our students so that they may serve as leaders in their communities.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
New York public teaching certification or public school teaching certification in another state with reciprocity to NY.
Knowledge of and a willingness to teach Ancient Greek is preferred but not required.
Outstanding teaching to develop students academically and personally
- Create a positive, structured learning environment in which students lead their learning
- Formulate higher order, open ended questions to lead students in scholarly conversation
- Motivate students to realize high academic and character standards
- Backwards plan unit and lesson plans aligned to the International Baccalaureate
- Analyze and reflect on data from quarterly interim assessments to refine curriculum and inform instructional practice
- Lead an advisory group of 15-20 students focused on community building and service
- Advise 3-5 students on the research and composition process as they complete a 4,000 word Extended Essay
- Exemplify the IB learner profile in interactions with students, families, and colleagues by striving to be knowledgeable, principled, caring, reflective, open minded, and balanced
- Help all students realize their potential as inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and risk takers
Collaboration in teacher teams for curricular and professional development
- Meet 2-3 times weekly as a department to develop and refine curriculum and instruction
- Effectively collaborate with colleagues to plan units and lessons
- Participate in twice monthly grade level team meetings focused on supporting all students
Spirited participation in our school community
- Engage in a community where teaching is public by conducting classroom visits, sharing curriculum, asking for and offering feedback, and setting and sharing goals for teaching
- Develop, lead, and recruit students for extracurricular activities focused on creativity, action, and service to the community
- Participation in 1 week August New Teacher Induction program
- Serve as a chaperone on school field trips that may include day trips to colleges and universities and overnight trips to the Princeton-Blairstown center, Boston, and Rome
- Engage in a limited number of student recruitment and parent outreach events on evenings or weekends
