CAES is proud to offer a number of scholarships and awards for members and non-members at various stages of their career. A statewide committee, consisting of constituents from various Classical societies, meets to review applications and decide on awards.

Descriptions of the various scholarships and awards are listed below.
THE WILLIAM MAYER SCHOLARSHIP
Up to $2000 in scholarship assistance may be awarded annually to a NYS student pursuing a Master’s degree with the intention of teaching Latin and whose enthusiasm for teaching the classics & Latin exemplifies what Bill Mayer brought to the profession. The application and all supporting material must be received by MAY 15.
THE JOSEPH C. CRISAFULLI JR. SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE ANNUAL INSTITUTE
THE JOHN E. REXINE SUMMER STUDY GRANT
The John E. Rexine Summer Study Grant is awarded to a full-time Latin and/or Greek teacher to further his or her study of the Classics. Up to $1000 will be awarded annually.
The scholarship can be applied to a study program at a college or university, a study tour abroad, or research. Other proposals, projects or independent work–with evidence of the study, research or writing involved–will also be considered. The applicant’s school must attest to the teacher’s employment for the year following the award.
The teacher must be a current member of CAES and will make a presentation at the subsequent Annual Institute. An alternate will also be selected in the event that the first winner cannot complete his or her plan. The application and recommendations must be received by MAY 15.
THE TERRY WALKER SCHOLARSHIP
The Terry Walker Scholarship is awarded to a New York State high school graduate or to a student currently enrolled in a university or college in New York State, who has completed at least the sophomore year in college. Preference is given to a student who is preparing to teach Latin on the elementary or secondary level. Up to $1000 is awarded as a one-year grant. A previous recipient may reapply. The application and all supporting material must be received by MAY 15.
THE DONNA CADWELL INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship consists of four grants of up to $250 each awarded to a member of CAES currently teaching Latin or Greek at a public or private institution who is attending the CAES Institute for the first time or has not attended in the past five years. Grants are to cover expenses incurred at the Institute. The deadline for the application is SEPTEMBER 15. Receipts are to be submitted after the Institute but no later than NOVEMBER 15.
THE GEORGE CONSTANTOU AWARD
This award recognizes an individual in the school or community who has actively supported a Latin program. A written recommendation and supporting materials should be received by MAY 15th. The name of the scholarship recipient will be announced at the time of the annual CAES Institute in October and will be published on the CAES website.
THE MORTON E. SPILLENGER AWARD
The Spillenger Award was instituted by CAES a number of years ago to commemorate the long and devoted work of Morton E. Spillenger. For many years, Morton worked in the NYS Education Department Bureau of Foreign Languages. A faithful member of CAES, Morton worked unstintingly for this organization and for the well-being of Latin studies in New York.
The Spillenger Award is given annually to one of our members in recognition of outstanding contributions to this organization, and to the teaching of Latin and Classical Studies. The Award honors long and dedicated service and leadership in CAES.
A written recommendation of the candidate’s service and leadership serves as a nomination and should be received by MAY 15th.
The name of the scholarship recipient will be announced at the time of the annual CAES Institute in October and will be published on the CAES website.
THE LEO C. CURRAN IN MEDIAS RES AWARD
The Leo C. Curran in Medias Res Award is awarded to an individual currently teaching in another subject area who is pursuing New York State certification in Latin in a credit bearing course. The award consists of $1500 which may be divided among up to three recipients per year. A written recommendation, transcripts, and other supporting material must be received by MAY 15.
This award recognizes a Latin program of special merit. Information and an application are available upon request. The deadline for the application and supporting documents is MAY 15.
