Summer Latin AP Courses

March 16, 2011 /Posted byCaes Nyat3:44 pm

Three different courses are being offered to teachers, including one week-long workshop on all of Caesar’s Gallic War, and two week-long workshops on Vergil in preparation for the NEW AP Vergil syllabus.

July 11-15  The Taft School, Watertown, CT
11C04 AP Latin: Teaching Caesar
This week-long workshop is designed to lead teachers through most or all of Caesar’s Gallic War text for the 2012-2013 school year.  It will be an experience translating and discussing the text, the political ramifications and the leadership role of Julius Caesar.  We will work with Book 1: chapters 1-7; Book 4: chapters 24-35 and the first sentence of chapter 36;  Book 5: chapters 24-48 Book 6: chapters 13-20.  Teachers will leave with an understanding of the Latin and English text as well as ideas for their preparation of the new material.  They are encouraged to bring a Caesar text and a laptop computer or a flash drive.  A variety of materials will be provided.
For any and all questions or more information contact jmcrooker@aol.com.
Instructor: Jill Crooker, Educational Consultant, Pittsford, NY

July 18-22  The Taft School, Watertown, CT
11D09 AP Latin: Vergil
This is the final year that AP Latin: Vergil will be offered in its present configuration. The workshop will give both new and experienced AP teachers the opportunity to read excerpts from books 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, & 12 of Vergil’s Aeneid, many sections of which will also be in the new syllabus (AP Latin) in 2012-13.  Special attention will be given to grading literal translations and how that instruction informs student performance on both the multiple choice section and the free response section of the exam. These skills will serve the present and future AP exam.  Throughout the week teachers will compile an assortment of passages with multiple choice questions to use in instruction. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop computer or a flash drive.
